Microneedling

Microneedling

If your skin needs a glow-up but downtime and invasive procedures are not options, consider microneedling. This beloved skin rejuvenating treatment stimulates collagen via a needle-based device to improve a variety of skin concerns, including smoothing lines and wrinkles, reducing the look of acne scars, and giving the skin a natural glow.

Microneedling is a popular treatment, but it’s not one to take lightly. Professionally-administered versions such as the SkinStylus device, which we use at Skin Plus Beauty, dramatically improve the skin.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a professionally administered skin-rejuvenating treatment that improves collagen levels within the skin to appear smoother, healthier, and more youthful.

The skin naturally repairs itself by attempting to create new collagen when it experiences scars, wrinkles, lines, and sun damage. With microneedling, the collagen-producing process is created using tiny stainless steel needles rolled or stamped onto the skin. The needles lead to micro-injuries (safe, controlled injuries that incite the skin’s healing process) that, in turn, incite collagen production for a noticeable improvement in the skin, including a reduction in wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, stretch marks, and more.

At Skin Plus Beauty, we use the SkinStylus microneedling device, the only FDA cleared microneedling device for use on the face and abdomen. Safely inserting the microneedles into the skin at appropriate depths (up to 2.5 millimeters) creates tiny punctures on the skin’s surface. These open channels allow specific serums and ingredients used during the treatment to penetrate deeper into the skin for optimal results. As these wounds heal over the coming days and weeks, the skin becomes smoother, plumper, and more youthful. The treatment safely stimulates collagen and elastin production with minimal downtime and is safe for all skin tones.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling involves using a motorized pen-like device equipped with tiny, sterile needles. The needles safely puncture the uppermost layers of skin to stimulate the body’s production of collagen and elastin to promote healthier, firmer, more even skin while simultaneously addressing various skin concerns.

As the skin heals from the micro-injuries, it undergoes a remodeling process that improves texture, tone, and overall appearance. Additionally, microneedling enhances the absorption of topical skincare products, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin for better efficacy.

Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can address various skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone. It is suitable for different skin types and can be performed on various areas of the body. The controlled nature of the procedure makes it a safe and effective option for individuals seeking a non-surgical approach to skin rejuvenation. Microneedling promotes natural collagen synthesis, resulting in a more youthful and revitalized complexion.

What Are The Benefits Of Microneedling?

Microneedling offers numerous skin benefits, which is why it’s used to improve everything from hair loss to acne scars and stretch marks, to name a few of its benefits.

One of the immediate benefits of microneedling is glowy, dewy skin. In the days following the treatment, the improved glow factor should last for a few weeks. Remember that microneedling is a cumulative effects treatment, so the more you do it, the brighter and more glow the skin appears.

Besides a healthy glow, microneedling also provides other skin benefits, such as:

A plump, healthy appearance

Stimulating dormant hair follicles to jumpstart hair growth

Reduce the appearance of scars and acne scars

Increase collagen production

Diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and minimal sun damage

Improve the appearance of stretch marks

Enhances the skin's texture

Improves discoloration and hyperpigmentation

Minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores

Microneedling is often combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), known as the “Vampire Facial.” This combination works well for those whose skin requires even more collagen production while enhancing skin tone, diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots, and improving acne scars better than microneedling alone. Microneedling with PRP imparts the same microneedling component as a standard treatment. However, once the microneedling portion is complete, a matrix containing plasma extracted from your blood is applied to the skin. The skin’s open channels allow the growth factors’ anti-aging effects to better absorb into the skin for more dramatic results.

Who Is Microneedling For?

Microneedling is safe for all skin tones and can be used on various body areas, from head to toe. The entire face and abdomen are fair game when it comes to microneedling with the SkinStylus device microneedling. However, you should avoid microneedling the eyelids.

The treatment also works well on acne scars, neck wrinkles, the scalp (to incite healthy hair growth), and areas of the body where stretch marks and scars may be present.

How Is Microneedling Different From Other Treatments?

Microneedling is a one-of-a-kind treatment that stimulates new collagen for healthier, younger-looking skin. Unlike lasers, which have better skin-tightening capabilities, microneedling works more on skin texture and tone but doesn’t come with major downtime. It’s also a safe treatment for a wide variety of different skin types and tones.

Injectables and fillers work wonders for filling in lines and wrinkles and stopping the formation of wrinkles, whereas microneedling smoothes the skin’s surface, making lines and wrinkles less apparent. Each treatment works differently, but both achieve the goal of smoother, younger-looking skin which is why it’s great to combine them.

Depending on your skin concerns, you may benefit from a combination approach that includes microneedling and botox, lasers or even chemical peels (done at different times).

Common FAQs

The skin will emerge pink or red following microneedling. Adding PRP to microneedling will leave the skin with pinpoint bleeding. The redness will subside in the first 24 hours after microneedling, and by day two, the skin may look flushed or slightly pink, which will continue to fade in the next few days. It may also feel tight or dry and flake off during the first few days after microneedling.

Remember that the more aggressive the microneedling treatment and the more healing the skin endures, the more redness ensues.

Since the skin is ‘open,’ it’s best to follow a simple, bland regimen and take a break from acids and exfoliating ingredients and products, including harsh cleansers, scrubs, and exfoliating masks and cleansers. Likewise, it’s best to avoid supercharged actives like vitamins A and C, retinol and retinoids, glycolic and salicylic acids, and fragranced skincare products until your provider gives you the green light to resume using them.

Sticking to gentle, healing moisturizers and ointments, a simple hyaluronic acid serum, and mineral sunscreen during the healing phase is best. Moisture is critical to healthy healing.

Yes, microneedling is one of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of acne scars. Depending on their depth, color, and age, we will recommend the best microneedling version for your skin.By creating new collagen deep within the skin, the scars plump and fade to be less noticeable.

Generally, there are no risks associated with microneedling as long as it is performed safely and by a professional. However, if it is not performed correctly by an experienced professional, there is more risk of infections, bruising, and hyperpigmentation.
